it’s funny the things that stick out in your mind when you’re small.  and how the first ten years of one’s life get compressed into snippets of flashbulb memories.

when i was a little girl, i remember music being on all of the time.  it was the 80s and mtv (back in the good ‘ol days where they showed videos) was always on.  when my mom hauled me around in the car, the radio was always up - and most of the time she would sing along.  i was a wee one, yes… but i knew music was important to her at the time.  i would listen but my vocabulary was limited and the car was noisy.  just knowing the melody and notes weren’t enough… i soon began a trend where i would ask her what songs were saying.  “what’s this one about?” i remember asking that question several times.  one word quickly become a common answer - “love.”  sure enough, she would try to explain things in kid-friendly terms and elaborate.  but most of the time, she would say, “this one is about love, too.”

after a couple of days of this routine, i knew that this thing… this feeling of love was important.  i wasn’t old enough to have experienced it… but i knew that it was something more than what i told my mom and dad each night before i went to bed.  maybe it was just a simple observation from my simple youth, but it was something that popped up in my head.

i hope that when i have kids, they will ask questions.  even more… i hope that i will have good answers for them.
